“Same as it ever was – State leadership on climate change in the post-Obama era” by Jared Snyder, Deputy Commissioner, Office of Air Resources, Climate Change and Energy.

States have played a leading role in responding to climate change since the administration of George W. Bush in the early 2000s. They have implemented bipartisan climate change initiatives like the northeast States’ Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative as well as policies to support renewable energy and energy efficiency. Those state policies informed and provided a model for President Obama’s climate initiatives, including the Clean Power Plan. Throughout the Obama years, New York and other States continued strengthening and expanding their efforts and their leadership is back in the spotlight in light of President Trump’s hostility towards any federal climate change policies.

Damascus Kafumbe, director.

The music of this student ensemble demonstrates the study of many musical Africanisms: complex polyphony, musical conversation, structured improvisation, recurrent patterns, layered ostinati, timbral variety, and tonal variations. Lecture by Brandon Baird, Assistant Professor of Spanish.

“Unequivocally Authentic: Mayan Language and Identity in Modern Guatemala” -
Despite centuries of oppression and attempts at extermination, Mayan languages are still spoken throughout Guatemala where they form a vital part of modern Maya identity. This talk, based on a survey of 162 people, explores how the Maya are balancing their language and culture with the ever-increasing need to use Spanish. Overall, the results show how modern Maya are fighting to preserve their identity and are finding new ways to express it, e.g. through modern music genres, film, and sports.
