Member Spotlight: Detail Works, A Spectrum Enterprise
Deluxe car detailing for social good.
Detail Works is a full-service car detailing enterprise that employs local youth in a supportive atmosphere with a mission to provide on-the-job coaching and mentoring so that they could learn all of the soft skills they need. These skills will not only help them find a job, but give them the tools and confidence to stick with it over the long term. Soft skills like: workplace etiquette, business attire, how to call out sick, how to work on a team, and how to talk to a boss.
Detail Works is a social enterprise of Spectrum Youth and Family Services that was set in motion with the support of UVM Medical Center, the Vermont Community Foundation, and individual donors. Start up costs came from a gift local philanthropist Cynthia Hoehl made before she passed away. The enterprise was born when Spectrum staff worked together to create three strategic objectives for their work, one of which was “Supportive Employment”. In order to identify the enterprise and develop a plan, Spectrum created a task force comprised of Spectrum staff, board members, and a local entrepreneur. This task force, with the help of a Leadership Champlain Class of 2016 service project team, officially launched Detail Works in 2017.
Spectrum Youth & Family Services is an organization based in Burlington, Vermont with a mission to empower teenagers, young adults, and their families to make and sustain positive changes through prevention, intervention, and life skills services.
The enterprise is run by General Manager Galen Blodgett and Youth Coordinator Mike Cioffi. Blodgett operates the business side of things while Cioffi works alongside youth and coaches them on job performance. All of the youth working at Detail Works are involved in Spectrum through one program or another and many of them live there. The employees champion the program outside of work hours and credit the opportunity with getting them out of a bad situation:
“I can’t begin to tell you how grateful I am. We have all had hardships and have been kicked to the curb by one person or another, and to know that all of you—some of you complete strangers to us—have the utmost faith in us and support us really means a lot.” And “I enjoy the looks on people’s faces when we detail their cars. They’re ecstatic about it. They’ve never seen their car so clean.”
-Charles, Detail Works Employee
